Movie Spotlight : Leon (1994) @ 11:45 AM

Léon

Plot Synopsis: Leon is a hitman, and happy with his life. When a young girl comes home to find her family has been killed by a drug dealer, she runs to him for help. When she discovers he is a hitman, she asks him to teach her the skills to take her revenge.

Starring:
Jean Reno as Leon
Natalie Portman as Mathilda
Gary Oldman as Stansfield

My Thoughts: As soon as I saw this movie, I immediately fell in love. This is my favorite movie ever. Ever. You know, I love unconventional love stories. And this is, in a way, a love story. It's a love story between a closed off, emotionally stunted hit man and the lively, enthusiastic girl that changes him. It's not an inappropriate love, but it's an interesting one. Jean Reno is completely amazing as Leon. And Natalie Portman stars in her best role ever, as the spunky Mathilda. The action just makes it even better. I'm an action junkie and to find a movie that both satisfies my action craving and is also something I consider cinematic art is. . .well, pretty damn rare.

When Mathilda finds out that Stansfield (played by crazy Gary Oldman) killed her whole family, she's furious and wants revenge. She enlists Leon to help her, and he reluctantly agrees. He teaches her how to 'clean', or kill. Her main focus is revenge, but throughout her interactions with Leon, she also helps him find joy in life. They both teach each other valuable lessons, which is refreshing to see.

Leon: Revenge is not a good thing, it's better to forget.
Mathilda: Forget? After I've seen the outline of my brother's body on the floor, you expect me to forget? I wanna kill those sons of bitches, and blow their fucking heads off!

Mathilda: I don't wanna lose you, Leon.
Leon: You're not going to lose me. You've given me a taste for life. I wanna be happy. Sleep in a bed, have roots. And you'll never be alone again, Mathilda. Please, go now, baby, go. Calm down, go now, go.

Grade: A++. A classic.

I've been trying to find the unrated, longer version on Blu-Ray but alas, it eludes me. Christmas present please?
